Sleep Apnea

What is it?

Sleep Apnea is a common disorder in which an individual will have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while they sleep. These pauses in breath can last anywhere from a few seconds to minutes at a time. They can occur hundreds of time during a night’s sleep. Generally, normal breathing will then start again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound. However the brain and the rest of the body may not get enough oxygen.

What can be done?

There are various treatment options for sleep apnea. One excellent option is an oral appliance that is custom made by your dentist. These not only work against sleep apnea but are also effective to stop snoring.

How does it work?

Sleep apnea oral appliances work by increasing the size of the upper airway by moving the jaw forward, which then reduces the air resistance that leads to sleep apnea and snoring.

These appliances are often used as a substitute for CPAP machines and are often most effective in sleep apnea patients who have mild or moderate sleep apnea.

A sleep test rendered by a sleep physician is recommended (to determine the diagnosis), and after the oral appliance is used (to determine if it is effective).
